- Should I connect to WiFi or use the Ethernet cable?
You should have an Ethernet cable in your workspace, and it should be the first choice for connecting to the network. If you are utilizing a desktop computer, connecting via Ethernet is your only option. If the Ethernet cable is connected and you do not have network access, please submit a Live Agent Helpdesk ticket for assistance.
If you have a laptop and a docking station, the docking station should always be connected to the network via the Ethernet cable. As with a desktop, if your laptop is connected to the docking station and you are not connected to the network, please submit a Live Agent Helpdesk ticket for assistance.
When your laptop is not connected to your docking station, or if you do not have a docking station, you can connect your laptop to the network via WiFi.
[For a brief period, you may have a desktop and laptop. During this period, please leave your desktop connected to ethernet and use WiFi to access the network with your new laptop.]
- How do I connect to WiFi in the office?
You can connect to the Hopkins network using your JHED ID and Password. The following are the considerations regarding which network to connect to and where to turn should a problem occur.
The Details:
Networks:
Johns Hopkins Enterprise Network offers three wireless network options, Hopkins, JHGuestnet, and eduroam. JHUP Staff should use Hopkins.
- Hopkins is a network intended for use by anyone with a valid JHED ID. This wireless network is built with many security features, and a high-speed data link is provided to all the resources on the internal network, including all JHUP resources. JHUP staff should connect to Hopkins when working onsite and not connected to the wired network via Ethernet.
- JHGuestnet is primarily for casual use by guests and visitors.
- eduroam (educational roaming) is a secure, worldwide network access service developed for the international research and education community. All Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, and students with a valid JHED ID may use this service here at JHU and anywhere in the world where it is available.
Wifi Coverage:
There is coverage in most locations throughout the spaces that we occupy in 2715 and 2701. We are in the process of updating our wireless infrastructure to enhance coverage and speed. Until the upgrade is complete, we ask that you remain connected to your docking station and that your docking station remains connected to the physical network to reduce traffic on the current wireless infrastructure. When the upgrade is complete, maintaining a wired Ethernet connection is preferable, but not as essential.
Access:
You can access the JHU wireless network with your JHED credentials. Please open the list of wireless networks and select Hopkins, provide your JHED credentials, and if this is the first time you should check the “Connect automatically” checkbox. All JHU and JHUP resources should be available once connected to the Hopkins network.
If you have difficulty connecting you can call the JHU HelpDesk at 410-955- HELP (4357), submit a ticket to Report device connectivity issues, or send an email to mailto:wireless_requests@jhmi.edu. With all these reporting options, be sure to provide the following information with your submission the JHU HelpDesk:
Users Name and telephone number:
Location: Building, Floor, and Room Number (if pertinent)
Make and Model of the device (1):
WiFi MAC Address of device (2):
